Overview Of Boston City Transit

Getting around Boston couldn’t be easier. Familiarize yourself with Boston’s transit system and available rideshares throughout the year when you visit the city.

Subway: Boston’s public subway is known as the MBTA (the “T”). The subway offers the Red, Green, Orange, and Blue lines. You can easily travel throughout Boston, into Cambridge, and to nearby suburbs, too. Google Maps also provides routes for the T. To ride, you need to buy a ticket at a subway station vending machine or a convenience store.

Bus: For areas that aren’t accessible via the subway, you should look to the public bus. Like the subway, you will need to buy a ticket to ride. If you need to ride the subway, bus transfers are included with most fares. The Silver Line runs from South Station to Logan International Airport and Boston’s Seaport, and connects to the Red, Green, and Blue Lines, too.

Ferry: Riding the ferry is a tourist attraction in its own right. It’s also a helpful way to connect with some of Boston’s neighboring communities and attractions. There are six MBTA ferries, and other, more scenic ferry tours include Boston Harbor Islands Ferries, Salem Ferry, and more. Be aware that some of the non-MBTA ferries don’t operate year-round.

Bikeshare: The bikeshare program in Boston is called BLUEbikes. There are more than 100 stations throughout the city where you can pick up and park, with more than 1,000 bikes. You can purchase a 24-hour Pass or a single-ride pass.
